Significance or The Lack of It?

Astronomy gripped me again. This picture (forwarded by NS) shows the size comparsion of all the planets in the Solar system. The next picture compares how gigantic the Sun itself is, making us look so small, so insignificant. Despite the size of all the other planets, our very own Earth is the only planet where LIFE thrives.

Small yet Alive!

Mesmerizingly HUGE Sun!

And these are just objects to demonstrate the comparison. Wow!

and the beauty of it is it still doesnt cover the whole picture! There are about 7 × 10^22 stars in about 100 billion galaxies in the "observable" universe and Sun is just one such star!!! :)

i find that a little too arrogant... :-)
there is too much we dontknow abt the worlds out there... and this seems a little too presumptious.

in an essay i once wrote, i conjectured that ours is such a planet which other intelligent beings deem unfit to ineract with.

yes, i know, am a little pessimistic on this topic. firm believer that humans have basically wrecked what was a beautiful earth :-)

@Direkishore: Yeah..the enormity of other stars is still out of picture.
@V: I guess invisible :P
@Zoxcleb: May be. But I have read a lot in Astronomy and Earth is the only planet "known" to have Life. There may be much more which is unknown in the universe. But as far as the Solar System goes, life exists on Earth and no other planet.

again, there is enough doubt to say that Europa may have life, what with its watery oceans. and now even Enceledaus has some.
but never mind... wont get into such a long windign debate here...

u were just making a point as to how insignificant we are.. and that has been taken :-)

btw, there is another one, a clock which maps the total duration of the planet and how little time we have spent on it.
